The end of history

Let’s take a step back from what we see in front of us these days. People are tense and worried. They can’t understand what is going on. Killings, cutting and chopping off different parts of the body, extremists are coming from out of nowhere. They are staring at us through our computer screens every time we venture out of our usual sites. What’s wrong with them, can’t they understand that even though we complain, we really are only venting out, like a frustrated wife. We are not asking for any major change in our lives.

We are content, we just want some more love and attention. The political scientist Frances Fukuyama who came out with the phrase “End of History” is admonishing us now for being nihilistic, soft “Tellytubies”. He came on TV and told off his opposing guest, who was ranting about extremist, jihadist, religious fanatics and the end of happiness. He told him and us; “What we may be witnessing is not just the end of the Cold War, or the passing of a particular period of postwar history, but the end of history as such: that is, the end point of mankind’s ideological evolution and the universalization of Western liberal democracy as the final form of human government.”

You couldn’t tell by watching the news lately. How dare history finish, while we are still alive. Obviously he is seeing stuff that we lesser IQ people can’t see. I continued listening. He said that there are more democracies now than ever. Sixty years ago a mere 30, now 120. Standards of living have never been higher for the human species. Compared to other animals and planets, we are way ahead. I decided to start my personal fast. I stopped watching the news, I existed when people started talking about the present situation, I only look at the arts pages in papers and online. Every week I read only one boring analyses of one subject in the news, this is my breakfast. I have not changed, I still need to take my medication and pay the electricity bills, but the whole world has changed around me.
