Unemployment rate to shoot up in next period: CSC statistics ‘3,193 citizens recruited in govt bodies’

KUWAIT CITY, June 27: Recent statistics issued by Civil Service Commission (CSC) indicated that unemployment rate will increase drastically in the next period due to inability of the ministries and other governmental establishments to accommodate more applicants on the waiting list of employment. Statistics showed the overall job vacancies announced by 37 public institutions for fiscal year 2014-2015 is 5,139, whereas applicants on the waiting list of employment are between 17 thousand and 20 thousand.

CSC sources lamented lack of cooperation between the officials in public institutions and the commission pertaining to registering the actual number of vacancies and new workforce required in their respective institutions, as supposed to be done, despite several governmental institutions have hundreds of job openings that are unannounced.

The sources pointed to 17 thousand individuals who were recruited in 2013 at public institutions and five thousand in private sector, affirming that public institutions have failed to provide CSC with its actual employment need.

The overall employment need presented last year exceeded 12 thousand, which indicates the public institutions intentionally reduce the number of new recruits in its annual plan and instead depend on a different system, statistics added.

This indicates the institutions do not stick to the recruitment system set by CSC and the trend of recruiting the new employees without going through CSC procedures is mainly caused by factors such as ‘wasta’ and nepotism, which are common in propagating favoritism among citizens.
