More than 30 yrs service - Labor refers expat workers for retirement 400 KAC workers express wish to leave company

KUWAIT CITY, June 16: The Ministry of Social Affairs and Labor has referred for retirement many expatriate legal workers in various sectors, according to the decision of the Cabinet, as they have been in service for more than 30 years, reports Al-Qabas daily quoting sources.

Sources explained the step is part of the ministry’s reform efforts but it suffers from a dearth of Kuwaiti legal experts who are supposed to replace the expatriates and are more aware of significant issues like combating visa trafficking.

Sources added some parties have called on the ministry to appoint citizens to fill vacant legal posts. Sources said the ministry is keen on benefiting from the legal automation field by providing a legal encyclopedia and electronically linking with the Ministry of Justice, as well as the Fatwa and Legislation Department, to facilitate procedures in obtaining legal information.

In another development, more than 400 Kuwait Airways Corporation (KAC) employees have expressed their wish to resign or transfer to other government institutions as the corporation prepares for its privatization, reports Al-Seyassah daily quoting sources. Sources revealed the deadline for the KAC workers to express such a wish ended on the first this month, indicating the corporation must change its structure as stipulated in the Privatization Law.

Sources confirmed over 400 out of the original 870 employees have expressed their desire to resign or move to other government departments. Sources added the corporation also decided to reduce its expatriate workers by laying off 1,000 of these employees within a year.
