Investigate ‘controversial issues’: PM

KUWAIT CITY, June 16, (KUNA): His Highness the Prime Minister Sheikh Jaber Al-Mubarak Al- Hamad Al-Sabah has asked the Public Prosecution to investigate “controversial issues publicized during an interview broadcast” by a satellite television channel, the Minister of State for Cabinet Affairs said on Monday. His Highness the Prime Minister has presented the Public Prosecutor with a written request, asking for investigating and determining the truth “with respect to the matters, mentioned during an interview, aired by one of the satellite television channels,” said Sheikh Mohammad Abdullah Al-Mubarak Al-Sabah, also the Acting Minister of Justice, in a statement to Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)

His Highness the Premier requested that the truth be established “as to what has been raised; namely suspicious money laundering, misappropriation of public funds and collaboration with Israel, as mentioned by one of the satellite channels,” the minister added. Sheikh Jaber Al-Mubarak stated, in part, in his paper addressed to the prosecutor, “In respect for the great vow we have made, the confidence accorded to us by His Highness the Amir may the Almighty protect him and the responsibility he has tasked us with; that compels us to abstain from concealment, refusing or procrastination in taking legal measures immediately against any person who may try to threaten the security of Kuwait, the stability of the government, the country’s stability, or who may misuse the public funds, and in affirmation of what we have previously announced that anyone who may possess information or documents or proofs in this respect, must not be hesitant in presenting himself in person in line with his (her) national responsibilities and report to the public prosecutor. “Hereupon, we present to you all that we possess as to the documents regarding this issue, and which we have received from the political leadership.” In a related development, the cabinet has asked the acting justice minister to coordinate with the Fatwa and Legislation Authority to present a request to the Public Prosecutor’s Office for investigations into recent corruption claims.

The move was taken during a weekly cabinet meeting held at Seif Palace on Monday under chairmanship of His Highness the Prime Minister Sheikh Jaber Mubarak Al-Hamad Al- Sabah. The cabinet also asked for legal action against anyone who could be found guilty in view of corruption allegations that were raised during a rally last Tuesday, Minister of State for Cabinet Affairs and Acting Justice Minister Sheikh Mohammad Abdullah Al-Mubarak Al- Sabah said in news remarks following the meeting. The move aims to ensure societal security, safeguard public funds and observe the rule of law, he said, echoing His Highness the Premier’s earlier calls for anybody who could have information or documents in this regard to come up with them immediately
