Tariffs set to be enforced

KUWAIT CITY, June 12: Ministry of Electricity and Water has set the final vision to implement tariffs on electricity and water (MEW), and referred the plan to the concerned authorities, reports Al- Anba daily.

Knowledgeable sources said the ministry divided the consumer groups into four categories and the rate of the first group will not change, indicating the ministry maintained the tariff of 2 fils per kilowatt of electricity and 800 fils per 1000 gallons of water while rates for the fourth group was increased to 12 fils per kilowatt of electricity and KD 2.5 per 1000 gallons of water.

Studies showed that the first group, which is the least priced, covers about 60 percent of consumers, so the expected increase in tariffs will not affect people with limited and middle income. In the same context, a ministry source said the power index of the ministry registered an unprecedented 12,160 megawatts on Tuesday due to high temperature which shot up to 49 degrees Celsius. Sources expected the power index will increase in the coming days because of high temperature.
