Boxer Al-Shammari lauded

A sports official praised Monday the Kuwaiti boxer, Salim Al-Shammari, for winning a bronze medal in the World Military Boxing Championship, held in Kazakhstan with participation of 20 countries. Al-Shammari won the bronze medal in heavyweight (+90kg) quarterfinals, beating his Pakistani counterpart in three rounds, before losing at the semifinals against the Kazakh player who grabbed the gold medal, the head of the military and sports competitions in Kuwaiti Military Sports Federation, Colonel Amer Yasser, told KUNA.

Preparation for the tournament was not at the required level and the players did not attend a training camp that commensurated with it, he added. However, the Kuwaiti player Al-Shammari won the bronze medal in the tournament, which saw strong competitions among elite world champions, Yasser said. A numbers of Kuwaiti players were excluded from participating because of the difference in fitness, compared to other competitors, he said. The medal earned by the Kuwaiti team was the only one won by a team representing a Gulf state in the games. (KUNA)
