‘Kuwait tops list with high obesity rates’

KUWAIT CITY, June 7: Kuwait topped the list of countries with high obesity rates at 45.5 percent, reports Al-Watan Arabic daily.

According to the study conducted by Medical Journal Lancet; Kuwait, Oman, Saudi Arabia and Qatar have the high obesity rates among male and female youths below 20 years old. Oman is in second place with 42.5 percent, followed by Saudi Arabia with 37.4 percent.

The magazine conducted the study in 188 countries by looking into their obesity rates among youths from 1980 to 2013.

The daily also quoted a report published by Arabian Business on the Medical Journal Lancet study, stating that Qatar is among the top 10 countries with high obesity rate among males at 33.5 percent. Kiribati Island in the Pacific region is on top of the list at 47.7 percent.

The study is aimed at opening discussions on obesity, particularly the rising rate among youths as it may lead to heart diseases and blood pressure problems
