Long-term ‘water thief’ nabbed: In a rare incident personnel from the Ministry of Electricity and Water have referred the owner of a housing complex to the Public Prosecution for stealing government property — water believed to be worth KD 200,000 over a period of 15 years, reports Al-Rai daily. According to the Assistant Undersecretary for Operations Sector and Maintenance Eng Mohammed Boushahri said the staff of Consumer Affairs sector became aware because the meter reading counter housing complexes in Salmiya showed a very low rate of consumption compared to the number of apartments — up to 300 apartments — and this raised doubts.

Eng Boushahri during his trip to cut water supply was amazed at a low rate of consumption because the figures were too low for such a huge complexes and a team was assigned the job to look for a fault. During the process they discovered the owner of the apartment complex had secretly established a link to steal the water from the main ministry network which was connected to the building through an underground pipeline. The ministry said this is an infringement on the services of the ministry and is a violation as per text of the law 48/2005. He said the ministry usually deals with cases of theft by forcing the other party to make good the costs but in this case the minister has issued strict instructions to refer the suspect to the Public Prosecution.
