Construction workers struggle to eke out a living working in the baking sun at one of the building sites in Kuwait
‘Specify timings for workers toiling under hot noon sun’ Contracting companies blame Labour ministry

KUWAIT CITY, June 1: Some construction workers and managers of contracting companies blame the Ministry of Social Affairs and Labor for making the contracting companies oblige their employees to work in the afternoon during summer when temperatures exceed 46 degrees Centigrade.

Sources disclosed that construction activities generally irritate the people living near construction sites as their activities begin at 5:00 am to 5:00 pm, besides the disturbance it causes to patients and students preparing for exams.

Meanwhile, a number of people interviewed on the issue have requested the ministry to have mercy on the construction workers who work at midday, just because they are afraid of losing their source of income and livelihood. Also, they urged the ministry to issue a firm decision to specify the period construction works should resume and stop working, amid strict supervision, stressing the delay in making a firm decision renders the laborers at the mercy of the hot sun.

Meanwhile, in another development, Minister of Public Works, Electricity and Water Abdulaziz Al- Ibrahim has clarified that the construction of a bridge above Riyadh Highway in front of Yarmook Residential Area is aimed at ensuring smooth traffic movement and safety of motorists from the exit of Yarmook to King Fahad Highway towards Kuwait International Airport, reports Al-Seyassah daily. In a recent press statement, Al-Ibrahim disclosed the bridge will be used to divert traffic from Yarmook through the road established near the bridge along Sheikh Zaid Road, passing under Yarmook Bridge.

He said the total cost of the project reached KD 454,279,000. Meanwhile, responding to the question of MP Saleh Ashoor; Al-Ibrahim affirmed all projects implemented by the ministry are beneficial to the public. He added the construction of the bridge started only after getting approval from all concerned official bodies.
