Member of Municipal Council warns against lift in subsidies Study negative repercussions: Al-Beghaili

KUWAIT CITY, April 30: Member of the Municipal Council Ahmad Al-Beghaili has warned government against withdrawing subsidies given to citizens, reports Al- Seyassah daily. He added “any such step taken won’t be desirable, particularly among the middle-income citizens, as well as those who earn limited income”, indicating most citizens are employed in government sector, and they solely depend on their salaries.

The council member wondered why government is moving toward the opposite direction with the intention of withdrawing subsidy on electricity, petrol and other foodstuffs at a time when employees of the government sector are asking for salary increment due to high standard of living in the country. He indicated the decision to withdraw government subsidy will be disastrous, particularly in the lives of the ordinary citizens, and regarded the step as time-bomb, especially in this particular period.

He called on the government to study negative repercussions the decision of withdrawing subsidy on some items may have on the entire society, including expatriates. He added the country spends nearly six billion dinars annually in subsidy and that the major part of the financial support goes to the government authorities, including Kuwait Petroleum Corporation (KPC) and its subsidiaries, so the subsidy does not reach citizens.
