‘Syrian rebels getting major financial support from Kuwait’ Epicenter of fundraising for groups: US official

KUWAIT CITY, April 27: Individuals and charity organizations in Kuwait are the largest financiers of groups who have been fighting the regime of Bashar Al-Assad according to US administration officials, reports the Al- Qabas daily. The daily quoting the Washington Post said, ‘The amount of money that has flowed from Kuwaiti individuals and through organized charities to Syrian rebel groups such as Jabhat al-Nusra totals in the hundreds of millions of dollars, according to experts whose estimates are endorsed by the Treasury Department’.

The daily quoting the same newspaper said, according to Treasury Undersecretary David S. Cohen Kuwait is “the epicenter of fundraising for terrorist groups in Syria.” In private meetings during the visit, however, Kerry questioned the role of Kuwaiti individuals and charities in sending money to Jabhat al- Nusra and other extremist groups in Syria. Kuwait’s response was that the country is addressing the issue, and has confirmed that there are steps that must be taken in this context.

The newspaper quoting a Kuwaiti official (who requested anonymity) said the government has established a financial intelligence unit whose job is to prepare reports about suspicious transaction and investigations into financing terrorism and money-laundering activities, but yes yet to begin work.
