Customs seizes 2.4m drug pills concealed in barbed wire cargo

KUWAIT CITY, April 19: Customs officers at the Shuwaikh Port foiled an attempt to smuggle about 2.4 million narcotic pills that were concealed inside a barbed wire cargo from Beirut to the country. A Syrian expatriate who went to the port to clear the consignment confessed knowing about the contents, and also claimed having other accomplices with whom he planned to smuggle the contraband through a company. Director General of Customs Affairs Khaled Al-Seif and Northern Ports Director were present at the scene to follow up the case.

Haris arrested over ‘theft’: Police apprehended the caretaker (haris) of a building in Salmiya area after four stolen motorbikes were found in front of the building, reports Al- Watan Arabic daily. A tenant of the building notified the police when he noticed the presence of strange motorbikes, because he had also lost a motorbike shortly after an accident in Qadsiya area. The search for his own motorbike, which he found among other stolen motorbikes, made him file a report on the presence of the three motorbikes in front of the house. The caretaker is being interrogated to determine if he is innocent or he actually aided the theft.

Drugs kill 76 citizens in year: A total of 76 Kuwaitis died due to drug addiction within a year only, reports Al-Shahed Weekly quoting Director General of Grass Project Ahmad Al-Shatti. Al-Shatti said drugs are spreading at an alarming rate with the youths as target, citing as an example the so-called ‘pink pill’ which is marketed as a brain booster with sales picking up during exams. He urged the concerned authorities to immediately take the necessary measures to combat this phenomenon. He pointed out it is wrong to think that the fight against drugs is a job exclusive to men as it is the duty of all members of the society. He said 98 percent of those addicted to drugs are smoking, indicating the first cigarette roll of hashish is usually taken when a student is still in the university. He added the cigarette companies spend around $3 billion a year for advertisements.
