Engineers & labourers stage sit-in for salary hike, bonus

KUWAIT CITY, April 16: One hundred Egyptian laborers and agricultural engineers at the department for fighting insects affiliated to the Health Ministry held a sitin at the premises of the Insects Lab in Al-Sabah Health Zone for three hours, asking the concerned authority to look into their increments which have been suspended by a judicial verdict, reports Al-Seyassah daily.

The workers explained that laborers were entitled to KD 99 bonus and engineers KD 165, as per contracts they signed with the Health Ministry about 12 years ago, and then an Amiri incentive worth KD 100 was paid to them.

Four years ago, the laborers and engineers asked for basic salary increment due to the prices hike. Later, the workers presented legal complaints saying their salaries have been unified despite the difference in their academic qualifications, and the court granted them an increment ranging from KD 30 to KD 100, as per academic qualification, but the sum was paid retroactively.

Subsequently, the Health Ministry filed lawsuit to suspend the disbursement of their increments and managed to secure a verdict from the Cassation Court about one and half years ago, and the verdict was enforced on 17 laborers and engineers. Currently, 200 laborers and engineers affiliated to the insect lab have been distributed to Al-Sabah, Al- Jahra and Wafra health zones respectively.

The workers have met with the Head of Health Affairs at Ports and Borders Dr Sami Al- Nasser who promised to alleviate every difficulty the workers are facing. They reiterated the ministry has since refused to allow them to travel abroad or visit their families for two years and without justification, although their criminal sheets in the Interior Ministry are clean.
