‘Almost ready for GCC women’s basketball champ’ship’

KUWAIT CITY, April 10, (KUNA): Preparations are in the final stage for the second GCC Women Basketball Championship, to be hosted here May 3-7. Head of the organizing committee, Chairwoman of Kuwait Women Sports Federation Sheikha Naima Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah, told KUNA the true sportsmanship between the players due here from the UAE, Bahrain, Qatar, and Oman and their peers from Kuwait is the real aim of the championship, not just the accumulation of medals by this or that team. As for preparations of the Kuwaiti athletes, she said a training camp program is underway in Salwa Sports Club and the players are so far showing high morale.

Sheikha Naima pointed out Kuwaiti women athletes are to compete in South Korea at the 17th Asian Games in Incheon in September. Junior athletes in different sports are being selected and prepared and a highly qualified coach is in charge of the training. The official meanwhile dedicated medals nabbed by Kuwaiti athletes at the 2nd GCC Athletics Championships Girls in Doha recently to His Highness the Amir and His Highness the Crown Prince Sheikh Nawaf Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah, who never failed to support Kuwaiti athletes in all sports.

Winning six medals at sad championship, she stressed, was a new record for Kuwaiti women sports. Sheikha Naima also expressed appreciation for the efforts and support of Minister of State for Youth Affairs and Minister of Information Sheikh Salman Sabah Al-Humoud Al-Sabah and of the Chairman of the Public Authority for Youth and Sports Sheikh Ahmad Mansour Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah.
