Workers seeking Umrah leave, pay hike end strike

KUWAIT CITY, April 10: The Assistant Undersecretary for Labor Affairs at Ministry of Social Affairs and Labor Jamal Al- Dousari revealed that the Labor Affairs sector ended the strike held by 2,000 employees who had refused to work until their grievances are properly addressed by the authority. In a press statement, Al-Dousari said the Ministry of Social Affairs and Labor intervened in the matter to solve the problems the employees faced in the company they worked.

When asked about the reason for the strike, the employees said the company withheld their passports to prevent them from going for Umrah (a minor pilgrimage to Makkah), and disregarded their demand for a salary increment. Al-Dosari revealed that the ministerial committee in charge of labor disputes managed to end the strike by coming to an amicable understanding with the employees, after which they returned to their work.

It assured them of their rights by obliging both sides to adhere to the Labor Law. He added that the company vowed to follow the law in paying the employees’ overtime dues, giving the employees breaks on weekends, and paying end-of-service indemnities to any employee who wishes to quit from the country.
