Ministry said to finalize work permit regulations

KUWAIT CITY, March 17: The Ministry of Social Affairs and Labor has finalized regulations on the issuance of work permits to pave the way for the submission of a report in this regard to the minister and undersecretary in order to start the implementation in April, reports Al-Anba daily quoting sources.

Sources clarified the ministry will allow transfer of commercial visit visas to work permits only for businesspersons and investors with investments and commercial projects in Kuwait.

The sources added the work permits will be issued according to certain conditions, such as the requirement for the companies to submit estimates of their manpower needs. Sources added the work permits will be granted after the 90-day trial period. The Ministry of Social Affairs and Labor has meanwhile started implementing a decision on requiring financial guarantee, amounting to KD 250, for each employee in a company or institution owned by a GCC citizen, reports Al-Watan Arabic daily quoting sources.

Sources explained the decision was taken earlier but it was never implemented, so the ministry started the implementation at the beginning of March. Sources said this step is aimed at protecting the rights of the expatriates employed by GCC nationals and to regulate the labor market, especially since the ministry noticed some people have manipulated the law. Sources added the Kuwaiti employers are not covered by the decision, unless the worker is registered in a government project.
