Verdict in protest by ex-MPs put on hold Transfer of Qatar brass libel case sought

KUWAIT CITY, March 10:  The Misdemeanor Court acquitted two citizens - Badr Muhammad Al-Sebaei and Faleh Badr Al-Sebaei - of participating in an illegal gathering. Meanwhile, the court adjourned until March 31 the issuance of its verdict on the case of 14 citizens, including eight former MPs, accused of participating in unlicensed march and gathering in Sabah Al-Nasser area. In another development, the court released four Bedouns, on bail of KD 100 each, accused of participating in the recent protests in Taima.  It also ordered 10-day extension of the detention of Bedoun activists - Abdallah Atallah, Abdulhakeem Al-Fadhli and Abdulnasser Al-Fadhli - to continue interrogations on their involvement in the Taima demonstration.
 
Case transfer sought: The Criminal Court, presided over by Judge Hassan Al-Shemmeri, referred the case filed by former Qatari prime minister Sheikh Jassem bin Hamad Al Thani and several Qatari military officers to the Chief Justice in order to determine another sector of the judiciary to handle the case. The case was filed against a local news channel and columnist Fuad Al-Hashim for offending the State of Qatar, its personalities and employees. In Monday’s session, the lawyer for the plaintiffs pleaded for the civil rights of his clients and asked the court to transfer the case to another section; while waiting for the verdict on a similar case being handled by another section.
 
Hearing postponed: The Cassation Court, chaired by Judge Faisal Khureibet, postponed deliberations on the State Security case filed against former MPs Falah Al-Sawagh, Khalid Al-Tahous and Bader Al-Dahoum for uttering statements deemed offensive to the entity of HH the Amir. The hearing was postponed until a decision is taken on the request of the defense panel to change the court that will look into the petition. It has been reported the accused made the offensive statements when they participated in a seminar organized by former MP Salem Al-Namlan in Jaber Al-Ali.
