‘Stop issuance of Article 17 passports’ Bedouns not included in 1965 census

KUWAIT CITY, March 5: Director of Citizenship and Passports Department Brigadier Mazen Al-Jarrah has issued a decision to stop the issuance of Article 17 passports to Bedouns who are not included in the 1965 census, except on certain humanitarian grounds such as education or medical treatment, reports Al-Watan Arabic daily quoting informed sources. They revealed that he insisted for non-issuance of passports to those who are not included in the 1980 and 1985 censuses, without his approval on the reasons for the passports.

They indicated that a large number of Bedouns who are not included in the 1965 census received Article 17 passports, adding that these passports will not be renewed after it expires without submitting an application to the Central System for Remedying the Status of Illegal Residents. The sources said Al-Jarrah introduced a procedure to be applied for those who are not included in the 1965 census for the issuance of the passports within one week, indicating that the department, which is responsible for issuance of Article 17 passports, receives almost 180 transactions of Bedoun people every Sunday, Tuesday and Wednesday.
They added that some employees work on Saturdays to prepare Kuwaiti passports in order to avoid work congestion and delays on weekdays.
