‘Accidents recorded last year 19% lower compared to 2012’ Fire outbreaks reach 4,661: Al-Mikrad

KUWAIT CITY, March 2: A total of 12,389 accidents were recorded in 2013-19 percent lower compared to 2012, says Al-Mikrad Deputy Director General of Fire Control Affairs at Kuwait Fire Service Directorate Brigadier Khalid Al-Mikrad.
Al-Mikrad made the announcement in a press conference on the Third International Fire and Safety Exhibition, which will be launched tomorrow under the patronage of HH the Prime Minister Sheikh Jaber Al-Mubarak in Jumeira Hotel.
He revealed the number of fire outbreaks reached 4,661 — seven percent lower than last year; indicating the residential fire outbreaks totaled 1,302 and this figure is six percent lower compared to 2012. He disclosed the number of vehicle fires reached 1,259 — 11 percent less than last year.
Moreover, the number of non-residential fires reached 540 — lower by 15 percent compared to last year, and the number of fires in other places totaled 1,540 — lower by 29 percent compared to 2012. Jahra Governorate recorded the highest number of fire incidents in 2013, while the rescue operations related to accidents declined by three percent with a total of 3,451 accidents. 
The good intention reports decreased by nine percent, and public services reached 1,704 lower by three percent compared to last year. The hoax calls totaled 81 — lower by 15 percent, and the firefighter casualties recorded was 172 — six percent lower than last year; thanks to the efficiency of firefighters in dealing with accidents, Al-Mikrad disclosed.
He added the casualties of other authorities reached 997 — an increase of one percent compared to 2012; while the number of deaths reached 153 — lower by 14 percent compared to last year and nine percent of the accidents were dealt with in less than an hour.
Talking about the exhibition, Al-Mikrad pointed out the event coincides with the 12th Firefighter Festival that will start on Thursday in Souq Sharq under the auspices of State Minister for Cabinet Affairs Sheikh Mohammed Al-Abdullah.
He said 73 companies will participate in the international exhibition which is aimed at exchanging experiences and organizing workshops to develop the skills of firefighters. He revealed the event will include nine workshops, adding that the directorate will establish a developed operation center in Mishref soon.
He confirmed the directorate has finalized reports on all fire incidents in Amghara, indicating some of the fire outbreaks in the area were deliberate.
On the Al-Shadadiya University fire, Al-Mikrad asserted it was unintentional as seen in the images captured by the surveillance cameras.
He also expressed sorrow for the demise of an Egyptian family when fire broke out in their apartment in Jabriya. He said there was no smoke detection system installed in the apartment, advising citizens and residents to be more cautious and to install such systems for their safety.
In another development, Al-Mikrad said the health insurance system for firefighters will be implemented by the end of April, attributing the delayed application of the system to the procedures for floating a tender to select the best insurance companies.
