KD 43m collected in traffic fines; 10,000 driving without license

KUWAIT CITY, Feb 19: The Assistant Undersecretary for Traffic Affairs at the Ministry of Interior Major-General Abdulfattah Al-Ali during a meeting in the office of Brigadier Abdullah Al-Miqlad has promised the citizens and residents to end the problem of traffic congestion, reports Al- Seyassah daily.

He added, 2016 will witness a breakthrough after the completion of the roads network in the country. In reply to a query in which direction the General Traffic Department was moving with regards to raising the fee to get a driver’s license to KD 500, Al-Ali said “we hope we will make it more than KD 500 and we have submitted a package of recommendations including increasing fees and toughening the penalties.

Al-Ali added Kuwait is suffering from the traffic crisis because there are some categories which don’t require the licenses based on the nature of their work while there are others who have more than one car although one person cannot have more than two cars but still there are those who pay charges for owning the third car.

Al-Ali affirmed there are 450 roaming patrols including 125 special police patrols in civil uniforms to monitor violations related to not wearing seatbelts and using mobile phone while driving and this means the traffic police have the right to impound the car in motorists continue to violate the laws. Al-Ali added the number of motorists violating the laws has decreased compared to last year during the same period. Al-Ali pointed 1,870 cars will be scrapped because they are not roadworthy.

He added, 10,000 persons were arrested for driving without licenses. Al-Ali revealed KD 43 million have been collected online in the form of traffic fines and 217 employees referred to the Public Prosecution for issuing driving licenses to people who did not comply with the conditions. He added the number of driving licenses issued every month will be reduced drastically to 1,000 from 8,000. He pointed out the main causes of congestion is the increase in the number of vehicles on the roads, because the capacity of the roads is between 800,000 and 900,000 while the exact number of vehicles on roads is about 1, 800,000.
