‘Only deserving must get nationality’ - No to ‘wasta’ applicants

KUWAIT CITY, Feb 14: MP Dr Abdullah Al-Teraiji has vowed to deal with what he described as the ‘exploitation of naturalization file’ and injustices done to those who truly deserve the Kuwaiti citizenship, reports Al-Rai daily. He disclosed modifications have been submitted to some articles of Naturalization Law to control government- parliament manipulations and attempts to naturalize undeserving applicants, adding manipulations of this nature have contributed to destroy the structure of Kuwaiti population.

He added some individuals obtained citizenship by ‘Wasta’ and forgery but the citizenship was revoked. According to the proposal he presented, it is allowed to grant Kuwaiti citizenship to persons who have offered magnificent services to promote national development.

The names of such nominees must be published in the official gazette and other Kuwaiti Arabic newspapers attached with an elaborate statement about the nature of sublime services they offered.

Moreover, the nationalities of nominees must be disclosed if they hold other countries’ citizenship and the person who obtains the Kuwaiti citizenship must renounce his previous nationality within three months from the date of naturalization.

Meanwhile, a number of lawmakers in the forthcoming parliamentary session will demand voting on the recommendations presented by the Parliamentary Finance Affairs Committee having to do with options for the proposed increment to the children allowance, reports Al-Anba daily quoting a reliable source.

The same source added the decision to suspend the proposal does not mean giving it up but to give the government grace period to present reasonable alternatives. He is expecting a minimum of 40 MPs will approve the proposal. In a related development, the source said the committee members have asked the government to conduct a study on unifying the salaries of employees holding similar academic certificates.
