Gunmen kill 7 policemen in Pakistan 6 children die in grenade explosion

KARACHI, Jan 26, (AFP): Gunmen on motorcycles Saturday shot dead six policemen in the restive southern Pakistani port city of Karachi, police said. The attackers targeted two police patrol vehicles at separate locations in the Landhi neighbourhood in east Karachi, senior police official Munir Shaikh told AFP. “At least six policemen were killed when unknown gunmen on motorcycles fired at their patrol vehicles with automatic weapons and threw a hand grenade at one vehicle,” he said. Shaikh said the police were investigating who was behind the attack, adding that nobody had claimed responsibility for the shootings.

Meanwhile, two gunmen in the northwestern Pakistani city of Peshawar shot dead a policeman standing guard outside a Hindu temple on Sunday, officials said, later fleeing the scene on a motorcycle. The attack, which occurred in the downtown Jhanda Bazar area, was the latest target connected to Pakistan’s minorities who make up some two percent of the country’s population of 180 million. “It appears to be a militant attack. The gunmen killed the lone policeman on duty outside the Hindu temple and then escaped,” Faisal Mukhtar, a senior police official, told AFP.
