Probe ministry workers owning nurseries: Rifae

KUWAIT CITY, Jan 25: Chairperson of the Private Nurseries Union Dr Muhammad Al-Rifae disclosed that the Ministry of Social Affairs and Labor has spent KD 640,000 in compensation for closing up 17 private nurseries for fear of Swine Flu spreading among the children.

In a press statement, Dr Rifae said ‘’there are ministry employees owning private nurseries in violation of the law’’. He called upon the sector minister Hind Al-Subaih to investigate the issue and take necessary legal measures against the violators. Dr Al-Rifae explained that ‘’only 36 nurseries are operating under the union’s umbrella out of the 350 nurseries distributed across the governorates’’.

He blamed the ministry for the huge number of nurseries springing up lately. He pointed out that the number of registered nurseries were 150 since 1970 - 2010 while 170 nurseries have been licensed as of 2010 - 2013, indicating a ratio of 57 nurseries per year. He described the rate of nurseries as enormous, given that most of them do not abide by rules and regulations. He reiterated some nurseries are being used for activities contrary to their objectives, such as renting the premises as tuition centers in the evenings.
