Police arrest 3 more suspects in Danish rape case Renews spotlight on sexual violence in India

NEW DELHI, Jan 18, (AFP): Three more male suspects were arrested Friday over the gang-rape of a Danish tourist that has renewed the spotlight on sexual violence in India, bringing the total number held to six.

The Danish victim was raped and robbed when she apparently approached a group of men for directions. “Two more persons have been arrested in connection with the rape case with the Danish national and one juvenile apprehended,” police spokesman Rajan Bhagat said in an emailed statement.

One of the men, aged around 20, was arrested in the tourist district in New Delhi where the assault on the 51- year-old victim occurred while the other, aged 24, was taken into custody in another part of the capital, Bhagat said.

Police gave no details about where the third male, a juvenile whose age was not given, was apprehended on suspicion of participating in the attack and robbery Tuesday. Police announced the arrest of two homeless men late on Wednesday while another suspect, aged 23, was arrested Thursday after raids at various locations in the Indian capital.

The Danish tourist, travelling alone and in Delhi after visiting the Taj Mahal monument in the northern city of Agra, had lost her way as she returned to her hotel in the main backpackers’ area. Senior police officer Alok Kumar said she had been assaulted for almost three hours at knife-point.
