KUWAIT CITY, Jan 13: Kuwait Sporting Club lost 0-8 to World Club Cham-pions Bayern Munich in an international friendly match Monday in Kuwait City. Kuwait’s football fans in a packed stadium were treated to free flowing football ignited by Bayern Munich FC at the home stadium of Kuwait Sporting Club. The world champions recorded eight clean goals against their Al-Kuwait FC opponents. The goals scorers included Cladio, Green, Muller (2 goals), Gotze (2 goals) and AlCantara (2 goals). The cold weather notwithstanding, about fifteen thousand Kuwaiti football fans thronged the stadium and were entertained by the world champions. The level of skills and techniques exhibited by the players in the historic match, especially by the team captain Claudio, Mandzukic, Martinez and Shaqiri, in addition to superstar Muller, Gotze, Alaba, AlCantara, Toni Kroos in the second half was simply outstanding. Six players from Bayern Munich’s treble-winning team were among the 23 nominees for the World Player of the Year award announced by FIFA on Tuesday so they were not part of the team that showed up in Kuwait.

The Kuwait FC side depended on the left flank runs by Rogero, who managed to penetrate the Bayern defense on four occasions with the most dangerous of all being in the 18th and 25th minutes where he penetrated Bayern defense to pass the ball to Essam Jumu’ah who shot it over the upper bar of the goal post. A second attempt by the Brazilian saw the ball graze the side post, almost bringing the teeming Kuwaiti crowd to their feet to celebrate the first goal of the game. There were also attempts made on the right side by Fahad Al-Enezi who almost scored the leading goal for Kuwait in the 15th minute but the ball was expertly blocked by Bayern’s keeper Starke. Mandzukic wasted an opportunity for the second goal in the 40th minute with a perfect kick from Salahi, whose powerful shot went out beside the side bar of the goal post. forty two minutes into the game Kuwait was awarded a free kick a few meters outside the penalty box, in which Hussein Hakim’s great strike was saved by Bayern’s keeper Starke.

Bayern Manager Guardiola made a few changes in the second half, bringing in Muller, Gotze, Kroos, Alaba and Green whose perfect combinations culminated in three goals scored in the first quarter of the second half. Green scored in the 48th minute and ten minutes later Gotze added another goal after the Kuwait club’s defense blunder in a goal mouth scramble. Muller butted in another in the 60th minute. Muller’s display of flair kept the fans excited. The right winger scored the fifth goal of the match and his personal second, firing a powerful shot that the passed by Sporting Club’s keeper Al Kandari in the 65th minute.  That was followed by a series of missed scoring opportunities by Bayern, encouraging the Kuwaiti side to make attempts at Starke’s goalpost but the world champions’ defenses managed to weather the storm. In the 81st minute, Alcantara made it 6-0 with a powerful shot and two minutes later, Gotze chipped in a goal to raise the tally to 7-0 with Alcantara scoring his second goal for the champions to finish in style at 8-0.

The match in Kuwait was part of Bayern Munich’s winter training schedule which usually takes the Bavarian team to the Middle East in an international friendly tour sponsored mostly by Volks Wagen Middle East. Attracted to the region for its growing number of top class sport facilities and guaranteed warm winter weather, FC Bayern Munich have been keen for this year to take on teams from other Gulf countries, which is why they have agreed to play Kuwait Sporting Club in Kuwait, said the club on its website. The Middle East tour provides the team with exactly what is neede to prepare for the challenges of the second half of the season — fantastic facilities, great weather and passionate local teams that want to challenge themselves against the some of the world’s best players. The team, after landing in Kuwait was taken to the palace where they were accorded some royal reception.
