‘4,075 fake firms referred to prosecution, GID since 2008’ 3,300 expats out of 12,000 rectify status

KUWAIT CITY, Jan 7: The Immigration Department, in cooperation with the Ministry of Social Affairs and Labor, has referred 4,075 dummy companies to the concerned institutions since 2008, says Deputy Director of the department Colonel Najeeb Al-Shatti.

Speaking in the recentlyconcluded forum entitled, “Role of the Media in the Fight against Human Trafficking”, Al-Shatti disclosed around 12,000 expatriates, who were registered under the dummy companies, ended up being part of the marginalized workforce. Al-Shatti said they referred half of the abovementioned companies to the Public Prosecution and the other half to the General Investigation Department, because they were accused of misdemeanor.

He affirmed the department dealt with those who were arrested in a humane manner. He added more than 5,000 of those arrested were able to rectify their status and 3,300 were deported as they failed to take the same step. According to Al-Shatti, the department is working closely with the Ministry of Social Affairs and Labor to combat human trafficking.

He said they have been tracking down dummy companies and many marginalized workers have been arrested to safeguard Kuwait’s reputation. He stressed the importance of addressing the marginalized workforce issue, including those who violated the Residency Law; especially since 40 to 60 percent of the crimes are committed by these people.
