MPs denounce Al-Ali’s actions

KUWAIT CITY, Dec 7: Assistant Undersecretary for Traffic Affairs at the Ministry of Interior Major- General Abdulfattah Al-Ali has been under fire from a number of MPs due to his way of enforcing traffic laws. MP Osama Al-Tahous denounced what he considers abusive enforcement of the law by Al- Ali, clarifying that “we are not demanding leniency, but we do not tolerate abuse.” The MP disclosed that he received a video clip of over 20 Kuwaiti youths detained in a small room, with some being forced to stand in the toilet.

He asserted the detention of these youths in such manner is unacceptable, so he asked the ministry officials and the minister himself to conduct a thorough investigation and take disciplinary action against those behind such acts. The MP added that the youths were detained after they were fined for illegal driving of buggies, which were also confiscated; wondering why they were detained despite the fine and impounding of the vehicles. He admitted he used to praise the major-general for his efforts, but he will not tolerate mistakes and abuse of the law. On the other hand, MP Mohammed Tanna stated that he is still waiting for the Minister of Interior to discipline Al-Ali for abusing the law.

He added that he previously warned the minister about officials who abuse their law enforcement power and that some are enforcing their own version of the law. The lawmaker also accused Al-Ali of forcing rental companies to pay fines for violations committed by the renter, wondering where the majorgeneral got this right. He pointed out this is nothing but abuse and the minister must stop this instantly. Meanwhile, MP Sultan Al-Shimeri asserted that we cannot turn a blind eye on Al-Ali’s abuse of power.

He said, “We all know that the major-general addresses violators in an inhumane and undignified manner. We wonder why he rejected the requests of violators to refer their cases to the court despite this procedure being a lawful right of the violator.”
