KUWAIT CITY, Dec 5: Chairperson of the Organizing Committee of Mine Action Program for Arabic-speaking Countries Dr Samira Al-Sayyed Omar said the Kuwait Institute for Scientific Research (KISR) will hold a workshop on the removal of mines on Dec 10, in cooperation with Kuwait Correlation Point for Environmental Projects (KCPEP) and Geneva International Centre for Humanitarian Demining (GICDH). The workshop is entitled, “The Environmental Effects of Landmines and Explosives — the Remnants of Wars and Mines- Related Works in the Arab World”, and it is under the auspices of Deputy Premier and Minister of Oil Mustafa Al-Shimali.

Omar disclosed the workshop is aimed at pushing for the implementation of projects on the rehabilitation of the environment, particularly from the negative effects of mines. She said Kuwait is one of the countries that experienced the most profound impact of mines during the Iraqi invasion in the 1990s. She added the workshop will focus on the removal of mines from the desert, increase public awareness on the existence of these explosives, and ways to eliminate the negative impact of these mines on the environment with the participation of 17 Arab countries.
