‘Form panel to stem divorce rate’ Issue to be referred to Cabinet
KUWAIT CITY, March 18: The alarming increase in divorce rate in Kuwait has prompted Minister of Justice, Awqaf and Islamic Affairs Sharida Al-Maousharji to call for the formation of a committee, consisting of members from the two ministries, to address the problem, reports Al-Qabas daily quoting sources.
Sources revealed most divorce cases in the country are caused by minor differences, while the absence or weakness of religious faith is considered a major factor. Sources said the issue will be referred to the Cabinet for discussion in order to find appropriate and lasting solutions.
Sources explained the panel, which Al-Maousharji intends to form, will be tasked to submit a detailed report on the causes of divorce and to establish offices in police stations that will help married couples settle their disputes amicably before resorting to the court. Sources said the committee will also promote the culture of dialogue and understanding, away from violence; in addition to proposing severe penalties on those who harm or hurt their spouses.
