International Women’s Day at AUK
The Center for Gulf Studies at the American University of Kuwait invites you to celebrate International Women’s Day.
Day 1 (Today) at Multipurpose room – An inter-disciplinary series of talks presenting original research on women in Kuwait. These talks will be presented in English.
2:00 to 3:00 pm: Dr Nada Al-Mutawa (Head of Research Division, Center for Gulf and Arabian Peninsula Studies, Kuwait University), “The Impact of Globalization on Women’s Empowerment in the GCC: Examining the Role of Networks”.
3:30 to 4:30 pm: Ms Emanuela Buseemi (Independent Researcher and Consultant), “The Woman’s Body between Private and Public: Kuwaiti Women Writers’ Narratives as a Space for Protest, Self-Determination and Empowerment”.
5:00 to 6:00 pm: Dr Pellegrino Luciano (Assistant Professor of Anthropology, AUK), “Kuwaiti Women with Foreign Spouses: Marginality, Intimacy and Citizenship”.
Day 2 – Wednesday, March 6, 2013 at Auditorium – 6:30 pm: “Kuwaiti Women’s Activism”. A panel discussion with prominent Kuwaiti women’s activists on topics such as women’s groups, feminist movements, the obstacles activists face, and connecting younger women to activism. The discussion and Q&A will be held in Arabic, with live English translation.
Participants: Ms Nouria Saddani (Founder of the Arab Women’s Development Society and The Kuwaiti Women of the Twenty-First Century); Dr Ibtihal Al-Khatib (Assistant Professor of English Language and Literature, Kuwait University); Ms Suha Al-Awadhi (Lawyer, Abdullah Al-Ahmed Law Firm); moderated by: Ms Fatema Hayat (Assistant Director of Student Life, AUK).
