‘Kuwait keen to end sponsorship system’ Residence may transfer to Ministry

KUWAIT CITY, March 3: The government is keen on completing procedures for the cancellation of the sponsorship system in the interest of the expatriate workers, reports Al-Anba daily quoting sources.
Sources said a new system will be implemented to allow the expatriate workers to transfer their residence permits to the Ministry of Social Affairs and Labor.

Asked about the authority tasked to hire workers from other countries to cover the needs of the local labor market, sources disclosed the current recruitment system will remain in effect to help the companies or individuals hire workers and issue entry visas. Sources clarified the workers must remain under their sponsors for one year before they can transfer to the ministry, but they can also stay with their sponsors if they want to.

On the establishment of a company for the recruitment of workers from abroad, sources said there is no need for this company once the National Assembly approves the proposed amendments to the National Sector Labor Law, particularly Article 125 which allows the creation of an authority for this purpose. Sources added a supplementary law will be issued soon to form the expatriate workers recruitment authority with an autonomous administrative structure under the umbrella of the ministry.
