‘Delayed project may cause power, water shortage in ’15’ MPW fails to collect KD 10.7m in dues

KUWAIT CITY, Feb 7: Kuwait might experience electricity and water shortage in 2015 due to the delayed implementation of the North Zour Station project, reports Al-Seyassah daily quoting sources.

Sources revealed the station, once completed, will produce 4,500 megawatts and 200 million imperial gallons of water, which would be enough to cover the need of the country. They cited differences between some political and parliamentary parties as the main reason behind the delay.

Sources added the Ministry of Electricity and Water (MEW) might not be able to supply electricity and water to new residential areas if the project is not implemented.

Meanwhile, the dues to be collected by the Ministry of Public Works from contractors, companies and individuals have reached KD 10.7 million, reports Al-Seyassah daily quoting ministerial sources.

They revealed that these dues include fines, which the ministry is supposed to collect from authorities who failed to deliver the projects on time, and fines for damages to its utilities.

They indicated that there are possibilities for these fines to be dropped due to the ministry’s negligence in collecting them.

They requested Minister of Electricity and Water, and Minister of Public Works Eng. Abdulaziz Al-Ibrahim to order the concerned departments to change the method of collecting such longstanding dues.
