Opposition groups form new coalition Full parliamentary system, elected PM eyed

KUWAIT CITY, Feb 6: Oppositionist ex-lawmakers, opposition youth organizations and their supporters gathered on Wednesday and announced the formation of unified coalition tasked with implementing opposition movements towards what they believe as “a full parliamentary system” and “an elected prime minister and government.

The oppositionists, including a number of labor unions and civil societies such as the Democratic Forum, gathered at the Diwaniya of former MP Musallam Al-Barrak in the area of Andalus in solidarity with the recently convicted twitter activists as well as former lawmakers Falah Al-Sawwagh, Khaled Al-Tahous and Badr Al-Dahoum who were present at the gathering. They expressed rejection of the one-vote election system and it’s elected National Assembly.

The Criminal Court on Tuesday sentenced the three ex-MPs to three years imprisonment for making statements deemed offensive the authority of HH the Amir.

“The authority is selective in its application of the law and we will bear the responsibility of our destiny and reject this selectiveness. The sentencing order on Al-Sawwagh, Al-Tahous and Al-Dahoum was issued yesterday without a date therefore it is invalid,” lamented Al-Barrak.

“This government cannot resume and the current National Assembly is illegitimate. The only solution is an elected government. The members of the Majority Bloc and the Islamic Constitutional Movement (ICM) are the people that are most supporting the royal family,” he added.

Al-Barrak warned the Interior Ministry that peaceful marches will be held “but whoever attacks us we will attack them.” He further announced that the opposition coalition will hold a conference Thursday afternoon to discuss future plans.

Representatives of various civil societies such as the Democratic Forum, the Shiite National Movement
and the Progressive Movement reiterated their rejection of the one-vote system and the “deliberate abuse and repression” and called on the release of the convicted activists.

Following the seminar, the opposition activists marched to the areas of Firdous, then Ardiyah, to the area of Sabah Al-Nasser in solidarity with the convicted activists.
