Surge in cyber crime raises concern Lack of laws hampers bid to nab criminals
KUWAIT CITY, Jan 29 One hundred and twenty electronic offenses were registered during 2012 against unknown persons, reports Al-Qabas daily quoting knowledgeable security sources.
The sources acknowledged this type of crimes have become a major concern to the security authorities due to the difficulty in arresting offenders and the difficulty of finding clues and details because the security authorities do not depend on traditional methods of detecting crime.
The sources added it has become necessary to accelerate the adoption of e-crime law since this type of crimes have increased almost on daily basis due to the large number of Internet users in the country.
In spite of the efforts exerted by the Interior Ministry, particularly the Criminal Investigations Department to fight cyber crime, reality shows a different trend since scores of offences have been recorded against unknown people due to the difficulty of in finding offenders.
The source pointed out lack of legislation to encounter crimes is one of the obstacles facing the Department for Combating Cyber Crime, as well as inadequate international cooperation between nations. The sources added there is also lack of efficient detectives who are specialized in fighting this type of crime.
The sources said the Criminal Investigation Department particularly the Department for Combating e-crimes has received a lot of complaints from citizens and residents regarding loss of money from their bank accounts - the loss attributed to hackers from outside the country.
Many people have fallen prey to scam e-mails which speak of huge prize money in return for a small sum of money in the form of commission.
Death of young woman probed: Police are investigating the incident in which a young woman lost her life on the Fahaheel Motorway, reports Alam Alyawm daily.
According to security sources the victim was in the car which was driven by an unidentified youth. The car overturned killing the woman on the spot.
The youth has been admitted to the Al-Razi Hospital with fracture to the spinal cord. Police will interrogate him once his condition gets better.
Drug addict threatens family: The Rumaithiya police have arrested a young Kuwaiti drug addict for threatening to stab his mother and sisters, reports Al-Watan Arabic daily.
Acting on information police rushed to the house and controlled the young man who was behaving hysterically and seized from his possession four sachets of heroin and 15 narcotic pills.
When police checked the records, they discovered he was the main cause of his brother’s death a few months ago who had succumbed to an overdose of drugs.
It has been reported the suspect tried to kill his four children two weeks ago. When he tried to throw the kids down from the third floor of a residential building the mother and sisters intervened and saved their lives.
Tons of rotten food seized: A team from the Imported Foodstuffs Department at the Kuwait Municipality in cooperation with the Ministry of Commerce and Industry raided a store in Farwaniya and confiscated 70 tons of expired foodstuffs, reports Al-Shahed daily.
