No need to demolish Grand Mosque: KISR Cracks tied to design of edifice
KUWAIT CITY, Jan 24: Kuwait Institute for Scientific Research (KISR) recently released a report on the reasons for cracks on the roof of the Grand Mosque along with recommendations for its renovation, reports Al-Qabas daily quoting an informed source.
He indicated that the problem is mainly due to the design of the mosque and the construction of the roof, adding that the concrete is not thick and strong enough to support the weight of the building.
He explained that the mosque does not require demolition because the sand used for its construction is appropriate.
Indicating that the crack was undetectable due to the embellishment on the roof, he said the report recommended using high standard metal or carbon fibers to prevent further cracking of the roof. The source revealed, “Amiri Diwan has expressed readiness to work on the rehabilitation of the mosque and its maintenance including the air-conditioning system. An international company will handle the maintenance project, which is expected to conclude before the next Ramadan.”
