Minister refutes rumors on spread of hepatitis A ‘Kuwait not facing an epidemic’

KUWAIT CITY, Nov 15: Health Minister Dr Ali Al-Obeidi has vehemently refuted rumors on the spread of hepatitis A in the country, reports Al-Rai daily.

Al-Obeidi argued there is no reason for the public to panic because the statistical data on hepatitis A cases over the last few years show Kuwait is not facing an epidemic. He pointed out the cases reported during those years fall within the average range; affirming that the concerned departments at the ministry are closely monitoring the issue and the necessary precautionary measures have been taken to protect public health.
Meanwhile, a senior official said the ministry will soon release a comprehensive statistical report on hepatitis A to assuage people’s fear of a possible outbreak. He asserted the situation is under control as the ministry continues to exert tremendous efforts to prevent spread of the disease.

The minister and senior ministry official are obviously reacting to news published recently quoting a medical source who claimed that an average of 8-9 persons suspected of having hepatitis A are referred to the Infectious Diseases Hospital daily.
