‘Korea Movie Night’ held at Laila Two films screened

KUWAIT CITY, Sept 19: The Embassy of the Republic of Korea hosted a ‘Korea Movie Night’ at Cinescape Laila on Tuesday, Sept 18 sponsored by the Korean Foundation and Kuwait National Cinema Company.
For those who are only able to relate Korea and its culture with K-pop and the virally acclaimed Psy and his Gangnam style, Park Ji Sung or Ban ki Moon, Korean cinema provides a new insight into the country’s dynamism.
Cinephiles were treated to two Korean films from distinct genres. Pacemaker, the first film screened is a sports drama directed by Dal-Joong Kim and starring Sung-kee Ahn, Tae-Joon Choi and Ara Goh that records the rise of the underdog. The second film of the evening, My Girlfriend Is An Agent, an action romantic comedy directed by Terra Shin stars Ha-Neul Kim, Ji-Hwan Kang and Elizabeth Sujin Ford is an entertaining spy flick.
Ambassador Kim Kyung Sik addressed the attendees, saying, “Today’s event serves as a contribution to strengthening overall bilateral cooperation and further developing relations between the Republic of Korea and the State of Kuwait, especially cultural cooperation and people to people exchanges.”
“In this regard, we have launched this year the Korean Cultural Diwaniya, a monthly forum to share Korean and Kuwaiti culture. The forum not only promoted the Korean culture but also boosted Korea’s relations with Kuwaiti people and Arabs. To our surprise, the number of participants to the Diwaniya far exceeded our expectation and has been increasing rapidly,” he added.
Based on the success, the Embassy has organized many cultural programs and events such as the ‘Korea Week’ which garnered a huge turnout. Encouraged by the huge participation, it was decided that a new aspect of Korean culture must be held for the people in Kuwait, which is the Korean cinema.
“In the last few decades, South Korea has emerged as a powerhouse of cinema, with Korean-made films winning global accolades,” the Ambassador remarked, drawing attention to South Korean director Kim Ki-duk’s “Pieta” which won the Golden Lion at the Venice film festival this month. “The Korean Wave, a term that was coined in mid 1999 and refers to spread of popular Korean culture comprising music, movies and drama, is gradually making its presence felt in Kuwait.”
“Cinema is a good medium for people to communicate with and understand different societies. I do hope that the event will boost and facilitate better understanding on Korea,” he concluded.
