‘Workers unions backing political blocs face law’ Ignore civil disobedience calls: MP

KUWAIT CITY, Feb 11: Minister of Social Affairs and Labor Zikra Al-Rashidi affirmed that the ministry will be decisive against any workers union that violates regulations, reports Al-Seyassah daily. The minister made this statement in response to intense criticism from the parliament and efforts by the opposition members to involve workers and students unions in their defiant agenda. In a press statement, she affirmed that the ministry will not hesitate in applying the law against any union that carries out activities against regulations that guide their activities.

She specifically cautioned the unions against conscripting their members into political, religious or sectarian activities, adding, “The law will take its full course against any union or association that supports political blocs.”

Meanwhile, MP Abdullah Al-Tamimi urged the Social Affairs and Labor Minister to take strong action against unions and societies that initiate civil disobedience to paralyze governmental activities.  He urged union leaders to ignore calls for civil disobedience, which has misled several youths who are on the verge of receiving jail terms. He stressed, “The union leaders are responsible for fighting for the interest of workers and not supporting any political bloc.”
