Malabar FC pip DHL to retain UGC Trophy Curtorcares take Fair Play award

KUWAIT CITY, Jan 30: In the soccer finals played on Jan 25, 2013, the Malabar FC retained the much coveted United Goans Trophy by a solitary goal which came from the boots of Shafi. Ironically it was the DHL which could have opened the scoring but the attempt by one of their forwards off inches off the target. Both sides played good attacking football but failed to capitalize on the opportunities that came their way - one of them was an attempt by Binu Jose who failed to put the ball past the rival keeper. Nonetheless, both goalkeepers had a field day and thwarted all attempts of the rivals. It was the dame luck did not favor the DHL as yet another of their attempt hit the goalpost and the rebound found the keeper. Ten minutes into the second half both teams made changes to find a result. A dangerous move by Malabar caught the DHL goalkeeper Manoj on the wrong foot. He fisted near the legs of waiting Mohammed Shafi who made no mistake with the volley to give Malabar the lead and increase his goal tally in the tournament to four.

From there on the Malabar boys looked confident and began to take control of the midfield. Seby and Elvis of DHL worked laboriously to get back in the game and their efforts nearly paid off when a Malabar defender failed to make a clearance, but DHL failed to take advantage of the lapse. Malabar could easily increase the lead when Younus got the better of Manoj and shot at the goal from a zero angle instead of sending the ball across to his teammate. Manoj did well to prevent further damage, but could not save the day for DHL. The proceedings were conducted by Mrs Nita Bhatkar. The chief guest John Simon of Al-Mulla Exchange Company praised UGC for concluding the 37th tournament and also commended the organizers for supporting the game of soccer.
