Kasarkode pip Kannur 1-0 as ‘power houses’ battle KEFAK’s Inter District tourney kicks off in style

KUWAIT CITY, Jan 23: Inter district football tournament organized by KEFAK in association with Shifa Al Jazeera medical centre had a colorful kick off on last Friday evening at Surra Public authority for sport and youth flood light stadium. Inaugural ceremony was graced by the valuable presence of Mr.Abdul Azeez Al Duwaij — Chairman — Dialogue centre being chief guest, leaderships from business communities, leaderships from various district associations, members and football aficionados of various district teams. Mubarak Yusuf delivered welcome speech and Mr.Abdul Azeez Al Duwaij inaugurated the tournament with a poignant speech. Later he kicked off the ball to mark kick off the tournament. Traditional ‘PuliKali’ organized by Thrissur district association (Tiger dance in the dress of tigers) added required flavor to the inaugural ceremony.

Top ten district teams are competing in this astounding tournament in two groups in a league format being organized first time in the history of expats in Kuwait by KEFAK. Registered players in KEFAK are playing for their own native districts passionately. Every Friday evening, four games are played. This football fiesta has already started spreading football fever among expats across Kuwait.

First match was between Trivandrum district (capital of Kerala) and Thrissur district (Cultural Capital of Kerala). Both were star studded with players of high caliber. Jineesh — Thrissur — was at top form as he took the rein of attack of Thrissur from the inception of match. He threaded several golden opportunities for Thrissue strilkers Jaijohn and Waseel but the could not capitalize it well due to solid defending by Thrivandrum in the leadership of Aju and Dixon. Both teams failed to open up scoring as match ended scoreless. Jinesh was deservedly awarded man of the match award sponsored by Iblack electronics. Award was given away by Mr.Shameer — Iblack sales incharge.

Second match was between power houses of Kerala football, Kannur district and Kasarkode district. Kasarkode started off the match lively and their hard work paid off in the opening minutes. Star striker of Kasarkode Jagadeesh entered the score sheet with first goal of this tournament with a superb strike outside the penalty area giving no room for Kannur custodian to avert the danger. Soon after the goal, Kannur started raiding continually Kasarkode penalty area with astute passes of their star play maker Noufal supported by Sumesh from the central midfield. Kannur striker Niyas had number of opportunities to equalize but his shots did not go through. Defence marshaled by Kasarkode in the leadership of Sayyid was always on alert with timely interceptions. Kasarkode withstood pressured attacks of Kannoor till the last moment and won the tie with one solitary goal. Noufal — Kannur — was deservedly awarded man of the match award and Jagadish was awarded for scoring first goal of the tournament sponsored by Recaro International and award was given away by Firoz Babu- Director.

Third of match of tournament was between Palakkad and Malappuram (Holy capital of Kerala Football). Palakkad started off the match lively with attacks from the wings and centre midfield. Star player Binoj was at the heart of Palakkad attacks as he anchored midfield lively. Malappuram was off the form in the beginning but gradually got into the match. Their Strikers Liyakath and Abbas were given ample of opportunities to open the scoring but lack of clinical finishing was proven costly for Malappuram. On the other hand, Palakkad defense regained their confidence after withstanding series of Malappuram attacks with the leadership of Jayakumar — former Titanium and state player. Palakkad super striker Noushad was fed a one to two pass ball and he found himself just few yards away from goal. His right foot bullet shot did not give any chance for Malappuram custodian. With a solitary goal Palakkad emerged victorious and Noushad was deservedly got Man of the Match award and first goal of the match award.

Fourth and final match of the day was between star studded Calicut — Paradise of Kerala Football — and Queen of Arabian sea- Eranakulam. One of the most beautiful and most enjoyed match of tournament by large crowd. With a typical flowing football, Eranakulam took command of the game from the first second of kick off. Operating from the right Eranakulam star player Najaf combined with strikers Zahir and Shamnas were dancing past the Calicut defense with ease marshalled by Qader and Prakash.

The rampant Eranakulam team returned to second half with more vigour, passion and energy. Clinical finish from super striker Zahir put Eranakulam at lead in the beginning of second half in a typical tiki-taka pass combining co striker Jamnas. Substitute Joyin, immediately upon entering the field collected a lose ball from the Calicut defense and scored fastest goal clinically that gave Eranakulam much relief and sent the stands to bombastic celebrations. Eranakulam Custodian Kochumon displayed unbelievable confidence and superb skills in the goal line. Kochumon was deservedly awarded man of the match award for his breath taking performance that was given away by Kumar and first goal scorer award was given to Zaheer by Kumar (GM, Al Badour Travels)

This Friday 25/1/2012 fixture is Wayanad vs Palaghat, Kozhikode vs Trissur B, Kannur vs Ernakulam and Trissur A vs Malappuram. The first match will start 4 pm at Public Authority for Youth & Sports Stadium Surra.
