Suresh, Bader capture top Masters title Binu P.D. and Sojan Red Advanced champions

KUWAIT CITY, Jan 23: Suresh and Bader were so good this week that they practically ran away with senior-most category title while Binu P.D. and Sojan were on top of their game to take the other crown in the Indian Badminton Association-Kuwait’s (IBAK) 2nd Masters Cup badminton tournament at the Saad Al-Awzi School in Salwa on Friday.
Suresh and Bader combined well and showed a lot of skills to Blue Tier championship while the Red Advanced category saw Binu P.D. and Sojan emerge as champions after putting in an excellent show which had their opponents gasping for breath.
Just before the start of both the finals, the IBAK officials held a short but impressive ceremony to honor Yawar Maqsood Khalil, the outgoing News Editor of the Arab Times who is leaving Kuwait after almost three decades, for his contribution to badminton and IBAK.
Dr Manimara Chozhan (IBAK president) and other IBAK officials, while presenting a plaque of appreciation to Mr Maqsood thanked him for supporting IBAK since it was established in 2010 and wished him well in his future endeavors.

Blue Tier
Suresh and Bader were so good that they brushed aside Ravi and Shyam 21-13 21-9 without any effort to clinch the championship. The domination of the champions was so complete that they gave away a miserly nine points in the second set and seemed to be in a hurry to finish the game.
Suresh and Bader had also practically walked through their semifinals as they hammered Tamer and Rafeeq 21-17 21-11 while Ravi and Shyam were stretched in the second set before they could beat Dr Mani and Abdul Jabbar 21-15 21-19 to set up the championship clash.
The losers of both the semifinals again took to the court, before the finals, to decide 3rd place and this time Tamer and Rafeeq walked home with a trophy as they stopped Dr Mani and Abdul Jabber after losing the first set to win the match 17-21 21-14 21-15.
Early in the morning some of the players had taken to the courts to complete their quarterfinal matches so as to decide the top four places as the last eight stage was played on a league basis.
Suresh and Bader had shared the top spot, although they lost their last game this week, with Ravi and Shyam who were in excellent form to clinch all their league games. Suresh and Bader had won all their games before the start of this week’s matches.
Dr Mani and Jabbar finished third with five victories and three defeats to earn their semifinal spot but two pairs were tied for the last semifinal spot. Tamer & Rafeeq and Chandra & Pushkar had similar records of four wins, three defeats and 12 points but Tamer and Rafeeq got the officials nod on a count back.
The Blue Tier Advanced quarPtserfinals had involved the top eight players in the Elimination Round, which had been divided into two groups. Four pairs from each of these groups had been selected for the quarterfinals.
