‘Control’ eyed on social networks Deal with UK firms

KUWAIT CITY, Jan 21: A security team has been assigned to look into the needs of Kuwait to control the social networking sites in cooperation with several British companies, reports Al-Rai daily quoting government sources.

The sources said Kuwait is in dire need to buy some specific e-programs which have been tried in several countries including the United States and Britain. These high technology programs are reportedly used in surveillance and detecting points of contacts and have easy access to people. These programs are also a direct challenge to parent companies which are supervising various social networking programs.

The source noted the costs of the security agreement for Internal Preventive Security between Kuwait and these companies was worth $250 million.

The sources added the agreement includes a clause on confidentiality of setting up programs by a specialized foreign team with the non-participation of any of the Kuwaiti team in the issue of use and access.

The sources said the agreement will not be disclosed without approving a special law on the use of such programs and legal action that should be taken to prosecute offenders.

The source noted there are draft laws ready with the Council of Ministers to organize ways to use those sites.
