‘Ready to serve’ pork seized in Salmiya restaurant Tons of rotten frozen meat found in Shuwaikh stores
KUWAIT CITY, Jan 6, (KUNA): An inspection team from the Capital headed by Undersecretary at the Ministry of Commerce and Industry Abdulaziz Al-Khalidi raided several stores belonging to food companies in Shuwaikh Industrial Area and impounded more than 7 tons of frozen meat unsuitable for consumption.
In a statement, Al-Khalidi said the ministry has been striving to stamp out the stores hoarding expired commodities and inspectors will intensify inspection campaigns to fight against merchants who trade with human health.
He disclosed the trader responsible for the expired meat has confessed he bought the product from the local market, but he will not be pardoned for trading in meat unsuitable for human consumption.
As regards the safety of imported meat, Al-Khalidi stressed that Customs and Municipality officials are devoted to ensure safety standard is observed while importing meat, although, that does not prevent the meat from becoming inedible due to lack of proper storage facilities.
In another development, Capital Municipality team also seized hundreds of kilos of fish at the fish market in Souq Sharq.
The Ministry of Commerce and Industry announced it has seized a quantity of pork from a well-known restaurant in Salmiya, reports Al-Kuwaitiah daily.
The daily quoting the ministry inspectors said the incident happened on New Year’s Eve. The meat was prepared and ready to be served to customers.
The daily added the inspectors then searched the premises and confiscated more meat which came from an unknown country.
Meat samples were sent for a lab test and results showed it was pig meat, prompting the ministry to close the restaurant and refer the owner to the Prosecution.
The ministry said it is surprised how banned food products enter the country in spite of the fact that most sophisticated devices are used at the border points.
