‘Radical views’ come under fire - ‘Respect Christians’

KUWAIT CITY, Dec 28: Some political and religious figures deplored certain radical religious views against wishing Christians on the occasion of the Christmas festival and New Year, stressing Islam is a tolerant religion that incites people to love and respect each other just as the Prophet Mohammad (PBUH) did with the Jews and Christians during his time.

Columnist Saoud Al-Samka said the strict Islamic trend that prohibits wishing Christians a ‘Merry Christmas’ implies their hatred to others, adding that Islam teaches people to be tolerant and wishing Christians during their celebratory occasions does not convert Muslims into Christians.

The Undersecretary of Shiites References in Kuwait Sayyed Mohammad Al-Mahri revealed that Muslims can celebrate Christmas and New Year, provided they stay away from the hard-line religious views that conflict with the Islamic religion.

Meanwhile, Pastor Emmanuel Ghareeb from the National Evangelical Church of Kuwait (NECK) said such radical point of views does not affect Christians in Kuwait including expatriates and citizens, revealing that the church received wishes from a large number of Muslims.

He clarified that they as Christians respect people’s viewpoints, adding that all religions have the same message - Love and respect each other.
