Lazio, Inter advance to Cup quarters Fiorentina pip Udinese 1-0

MILAN, Dec 19, (Agencies): Lazio beat Siena 4-1 on penalties to advance to the Italian Cup quarterfinals on Wednesday. Siena appeared to be heading for the next round, in new coach Giuseppe Iachini’s first match in charge, after a comedy own goal 10 minutes into the second half. Lazio goalkeeper Juan Pablo Carrizo did well to deny Francesco Valiani but defender Michael Ciani’s attempted clearance then crashed off teammate Lorik Cana and into the net. However, Ciani atoned for his error by heading in an equalizer in the fifth minute of stoppage time. Siena missed several chances in extra time before Simone Vergassola and Marcelo Larrondo had their spot kicks saved in the shootout. Lazio will next face Catania, which beat Parma on penalties last week. Fiorentina will face Roma after a 1-0 win over Udinese.

Borja Valero capitalized on an error from Dusan Basta to score the only goal of the game in the 36th minute.
Earlier, Inter Milan moved into the Italian Cup quarter-finals with a 2-0 victory over second-tier Verona. Inter’s Italy striker Antonio Cassano and Colombia midfielder Fredy Guarin were on target in the second half for the 2011 cup winners. AC Milan, Juventus, Catania and AS Roma had already booked their places in the last eight. Meanwhile, Cagliari’s Serie A match against defending champion Juventus will be played at Parma due to ongoing work at the Sardinian team’s home ground. The Italian league says on Wednesday that Friday’s game will be at Parma’s Stadio Tardini after the local council refused to grant Cagliari a temporary safety certificate. The Tardini is more than 780 kilometers from Cagliari’s Is Arenas Stadium.

Approximately 15,000 tickets have already been sold for what was set to be a sell-out match against the Serie A leader. Last season’s home match against Juventus, where the Bianconeri mathematically won the Serie A title, was moved to Trieste. AC Milan striker M’Baye Niang celebrated his 18th birthday on Wednesday by signing a two-year extension to his contract. Niang signed from French club Caen in the offseason and has impressed enough for Milan to tie him to the club until June 30, 2017. In another move, Sampdoria have sacked coach Ciro Ferrara and replaced him with Delio Rossi, the Serie A side said following a weekend loss to Catania which left the Genoans just three points off the drop zone. Ferrara had briefly looked to have saved himself after ending a recent run of seven straight losses with two wins - including a derby meeting with Genoa. But one point from the last three games sealed his fate.

Delio Rossi, 52, has previosuly coached Lazio, Palermo and Fiorentina, where he was fired last season after hitting one of his players, the just substituted Adem Ljajic. Ferrara’s sacking came on the same day that Siena fired Serse Cosmi, bringing the total to seven this season in Italy. Palermo sacked Giuseppe Sannino in September, with chairman Maurizio Zamparini taking on former Inter Milan handler Gian Piero Gasperini.
Chievo fired Domenico Di Carlo and brought in Eugenio Corini, while Cagliari’s Massimo Ficcadenti gave way to Ivo Pulga. Genoa dumped Gigi De Canio in October and drafted Luigi Del Neri while at Pescara, Cristiano Bergodi came in last month for Giovanni Stroppa, who resigned. Last season, there were 19 dismissals in Serie A, which totals 20 clubs.
