Court orders local Arabic daily shut for one week

KUWAIT CITY, Dec 18: The Criminal Court ruled that Al-Shahed newspaper be closed down for one week based on lawsuit political activist Dr Ahmad Al-Khateeb filed against the newspaper for an article it published entitled “Abu Mosailema Al-Kazab and the Country of Fire”.

The court chaired by Judge Yousef Al-Lahdan also fined Editor in-chief of the newspaper KD 10,000 plus temporary compensation of KD 5,001.

Attorney Bassam Al-Asousi said the article included offensive phrases and degrading the plaintiff; in addition, the defendant violated the limits of legal criticism as per the freedom of opinion and expression which is guaranteed by the constitution.

In another case, the Misdemeanor Court of Appeals upheld the verdict of the lower court, which acquitted a dentist from the charges of committing immoral activities with a nurse working with him and quarreling with the latter’s husband. However, the court suspended enforcing the penalty of fining the nurse’s husband KD 50 for three years, provided he signs a pledge of good conduct and behavior.

According to the case files, the dentist deliberately touched the nurse’s wrist every time she handed him any tool during their work in a school clinic. However, she confronted him when he touched her body in a sexually provocative manner and the dentist punished her out of fury. When her husband came to the clinic to pick her after work, she informed him of the incident and the punishment. He immediately rushed into the clinic and attacked the doctor.

The dentist’s attorney Lawyer Norah Al-Waheeb raised doubts against the testimonies of the couple, stressing that the husband attacked the dentist first.

She informed the court that the accusations of the dentist’s immoral activities are malicious, as the nurse was retaliating against the dentist for asking her to leave due to her negligence at work.
