Hundreds of maids report ill-treatment, no salaries

KUWAIT CITY, Dec 1: About 700 to 900 maidservants from five different nationalities resorted to their embassies in the course of the year, reports Al-Seyassah daily.
The daily quoting Hadi Al-Enezi, the Head of Labor Relations and Director of the Center for Harboring Foreign Workers in Ministry of Social Affairs and Labor added the maidservants resorted to their embassies for several reasons, and notably ill-treatment and late payment of their salaries. He noted the majority of them belong to countries that are popular to citizens.
In a related development, Al-Enezi said Kuwait can not ratify the International Convention on domestic workers due to the absence of laws for domestic workers in the country.
He stressed that cases related to abuse of workers and their rights will be suspended until the National Assembly ratifies draft laws submitted in that regard.
He pointed out that delays in the opening of the center to accommodate domestic workers are caused by faults in the drainage system, but the center is expected to be opened next January.
