Carmel School show class in opener Kuwait cricket kicks off school cricket tourney

KUWAIT CITY, Nov 13: Kuwait Cricket in its bid to concentrate more and to promote grass root level cricket in Kuwait launched the U-18 School cricket tournament on Saturday, November 10, 2012 at Sulaibiya cricket ground. The colorful event which was witnessed by a large group of school children, Kuwait’s women cricket team, parents, well wishers and cricket lovers was officially and collectively inaugurated by Jeff De Lange, Chairman, Kuwait Cricket Council, Mrs Rita Mahmoud Abdullah and Mahmoud Abdulla, Vice-Chairman Kuwait Cricket council as the trio cut the cake to launch the Gulf Four sponsored U-18 school cricket tournament. Many other dignitaries to the likes of Asad Baig, Director, General, Kuwait Cricket, Mehaboob Khan, Director, Women’s Cricket, Arjuna Amarasinghe, General Manager, Website and statistic, Kuwait Cricket, Murali Kutticode, Director, Junior/Corporate Cricket, Kuwait Cricket coaches Tahir Khan, Tariq Shah, Ghayoor Ahmed, Jude Dsilva, Sandra Almeida etc. present during the ceremony.

In the first match, Carmel School, riding on a magnificent all-round performance of Mohammed Waseef, chalked up a convincing 10 wicket victory over Cricket Coaching Club. Batting first, CCC posted a decent total of 101 runs in their allotted 20 overs in which Chris stroked a useful 28 runs. Mohammed Wassef bowled well to capture 3 vital wickets while Azeem and Heinz bowled well to grab 2 wickets each.
Chasing a moderate total, Aleem and Waseef batted confidently and the duo paced the innings with some fine batting display. Carmel School notched up the winning run in the 13th over. Aleem top scored with 44 unbeaten runs while Waseef scored 34 runs and rightly earned the “Player of the match for his brilliant spell of 3 overs in which he grabbed 3 wickets conceding 14 runs. Asad Baig, Director General, Kuwait Cricket, presented the Player of the match trophy to Mohammed Waseef.

In the afternoon match, Future Star Cricket Academy comfortably registered a 7-wicket victory over ICSK Gladiators (Indian Central School). Winning the toss, ICSK batted first and piled up 116 runs in allotted 20 overs. Meezan the captain was in terrific form as he clouted 3 sixes and 4 fours to score 42 runs in just 20 balls. Anyway, the introduction of Ali Zaheer turned the tables as ICSK were folded to a moderate score. Ali Zaheer, spinning the ball viciously, bags 4 wickets for 13 runs.
Needing to score 117 runs, Future Star team were in trouble as Meezan had both the openers back in the pavilion and Saad accounted for another batsmen to leave Future stars tottering. Ali Zaheer came to the crease to rescue the team and the experienced lad displayed his batting proves to score a fluent 58 runs to give his team a well deserved victory in the 15th over. Ali Zaheer was awarded the Player of the match for his superb all round skills by Asad Baig.
The matches were officiated by Abdul Qayyum, Naveen D’Souza, Syed Naimatullah Nadeem and Arjuna Amaratunga.
