Samuel outlast Al-Tazaj to clinch title Hilton hand Holiday Inn 72-64 defeat

KUWAIT CITY, Nov 10: Samuel beat Al-Tazaj 73-64 to clinch the Inter-Company championship title played Friday as the LBC sponsored Filipino Basketball League (FBL) conferences continue at the Nasser Sports Club. Samuel got off to a blazing start and ruled the game in their championship clash against the Al-Tazaj squad. Veteran point guard, Rodriguez directing play, drew first blood with a short jumper from the opening whistle. The star-studded Samuel squad dictated the pace of the game as Tolentino, Imperial, Matute and Jagatac weighed into the fray to partner with Bernarte with their deluges to finish the first half 46-30.

Cruz, who appeared to be a lone star in the Al-Tazaj squad, scoring 9 in the first half, did his best but could only manage to have his side trail the more experienced Samuel team as they run wild from round to round leaving a trail of havoc in their trail, 33-15, 46-30, 58-41 and finally 73-64 at the buzzer. The third and final rounds saw Samuel widen the gap behind the torrid shooting of Rodriguez along with Matute and Tolentino in a 14-10 run. Raucous cheers from supporters of both teams kept the air festive and alive, with the Al-Tazaj group comprising family members of players the loudest, but eventually quieted down and applauded Samuel, the winning team.

Al-Tazaj, also a star-studded side in their own right, fielding notables like Soriano, Cruz, Pascual and Rocreo stood ready to match Samuel boot for boot. Rocreo scored 19 points of the 64 Al-Tazaj ended with. Cruz was the player to watch among the A-Tazaj stars as he stood solid in defense while also directing play in offense. He scored 6 points to support Nicholas and Manamtam who scored 12 and 10 apiece. In another keenly contested game, Hilton Hotel fought off a furious Holiday Inn handing them a 72-64 defeat in a semi-final open division encounter, played before a noisy capacity crowd in the indoor court. The high-octane encounter was pretty much a ding-dong affair in the first half with Hilton dominating the first quarter courtesy Realin, De La Cruz and AlAwadi who combined to lead them to the 23-16 first round finish.

Pratts and Abdul-Aziz led the Holiday in the second round to 19-11 finish, scoring 8 and 5 points apiece but the third quarter saw Hilton ramp up with a balanced offense and defense to take control of the game to the finish, dazzling the their opponents 14-12 and 24-17 in the final half to end the game 72-64. Holiday had to play minus one of their stalwart defense players as he got fouled out on his fifth infringement.
In another open division game the Chatters beat Pinoy Kuwait 97-86 to carry the day with #8, #5, #18 and #00 leading the attack to register the win. The rounds ended 17-19, 29-27, 22-17 and 29-23. In the final basketball game, Bad Bananas edged Kuwait Flour 69-58, Norman Rustia, Leonel Rocreo, Renado Cruz, Alwin Trinidad and Jeffery Fajardo featuring for the Bananas.

In the women’s volleyball game between Go-Sport and Regency, the former scampered to a 2-1 set victory, paced by Marion, who was named the Best Player, the award for which was sponsored by LBC Sports. Go-Sports put up a good fight to win the first game 26-24 but Regency, led by Alpay and Choumicha got right back in the fray to clinch the second with a convincing 25-18 win and tie the scoring at that time, priming for an exciting final game. However, Marion’s skills proved too devastating for the Regency, leaving them floundering 25-23 n the last round. The match was safe in Go-Sport’s kitty.

Gigi’s display of roofs for Fil-Q8 was commendable. Edle was a delight to watch in the second game, scoring four points consecutively. Rose, Gigi and Ruth were the star players for Fil Q8 as they led their side to a nail-biting 1-1 drawn game against Quantum. Featuring for Quantum were Fatima, Zis, Apol, Miah, Chey, Choi, Edle and Nere. In the last game GIC disposed of Nature Spa by 2 sets to 1, with Glenda, Mitch, Edz, Lyn, Aren, Myrel, Jean and Ralyn featuring for GIC. The Nature Spa side was also composed of players like Kriss, Lynn, Alma, Ynah, Ria and Eurmez.
