Dilshan out of NZ ODI series Sri Lanka name rookie spinner in squad

HAMBANTOTA, Sri Lanka, Nov 9, (Agencies): Prolific Sri Lanka opener Tillakaratne Dilshan has a back injury and will not play in the remaining two one-day internationals against New Zealand.
Captain Mahela Jayawardene said on Friday the management decided to rest Dilshan, who has a minor disk-related problem. He will not play in the last two matches of the series on Saturday and Monday at Mahinda Rajapaksa Stadium in Hambantota.
Batsman Chamara Kapugedera replaced him in the squad.
The opener braved back pain and slammed an unbeaten 102 in leading Sri Lanka to a seven-wicket win under the Duckworth/Lewis method in the third match on Tuesday.
The win gave Sri Lanka an unassailable 2-0 lead in the five-match series with the first game being washed out.
Jayawardene said his team would miss Dilshan’s “allround package”—his flamboyant batting at the top order, economical offspin bowling and agile fielding.

“It’s not too bad,” Jayawardene said on the injury. “With adequate rest it will heal naturally.”
Though Kapugedera was selected, Dinesh Chandimal was expected to make the playing XI on Saturday.
A win will enable Sri Lanka to wrap up the series, and Jayawardene said his concern was not only a series win but also adjusting to the International Cricket Council’s new field restriction rules which he has already criticized as heavily favoring the batsmen.
Jayawardene said the new rule to have a maximum four fielders in the outfield even outside powerplay overs could kill the spinners’ attacking instincts.
He said he will write to the ICC at the end of the series expressing his views.
Sri Lanka have named uncapped teenage off-spinner Tharindu Kaushal in their squad for the two-Test series against New Zealand starting at Galle on Nov 17.
Kaushal represented Sri Lanka at the under-19 World Cup in Australia earlier this year and is a member of the Sri Lanka one-day squad currently playing New Zealand in a five-match series.

“Kaushal has a lot of potential and we have included him in the squad to (help him) get the feel of being in the presence of senior players and train with them,” chief selector Ashantha de Mel said on Friday.
Kaushal, who has not played a first-class match yet, almost certainly will not make his debut in the Galle Test where off-spinner Suraj Randiv is expected to join experienced left-arm spinner Rangana Herath in the playing XI.
“We will see how the other off-spinner Suraj Randiv bowls in the first Test and then decide whether we should take a gamble with Kaushal,” de Mel said.
Colombo hosts the second Test from Nov 25.
Sri Lanka Test squad: Mahela Jayawardene (captain), Angelo Mathews, Tillakaratne Dilshan, Tharanga Paranavitana, Kumar Sangakkara, Thilan Samaraweera, Prassanna Jayawardene, Tharindu Kaushal, Suraj Randiv, Rangana Herath, Dinesh Chandimal, Nuwan Kulasekara, Chanaka Welegedara, Shaminda Eranga, Dhammika Prasad.
